Learning for the 'Real World'
We endeavour to provide real and relevant learning experiences for our students. We understand that when our young people see the purpose and relevance of classroom learning, that they are more likely to be engaged, learn effectively and achieve.
Gateway
The Gateway programme supports career decision making through providing work based learning experiences and opportunities for students to learn in the real world in an industry or workplace appropriate to a students interests and strengths. Each year over 70 students from HPC take advantage of this opportunity and for many, Gateway experiences help them in making decisions about career planning or in gaining an apprenticeship or employment opportunity. Gateways opportunities include industries such as Building and Construction, Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Graphics and Design, Office Administration, Travel and Tourism, Service and Retailing, Hospitality, Electrotechnology, Sports and Fitness, Early Childhood Education, Media, Music and the Professions such as Accounting, Medicine, Law.
Building and Construction
A feature of HPC are the Trades based programmes which we offer at senior levels. In addition to the NCEA qualification, students are also able to gain a Building and Construction qualification at Levels 1, 2 and 3. In Building and Construction, students learn many of the key skills and knowledge required to take up a career in building or related trades industries. This is supported by other courses such as Business Studies and Engineering.
Agriculture
As a rural school, Hauraki Plains College has a keen interest in ensuring a quality workforce for the agricultural community. To this end students are able to complete a qualification in agriculture in addition to their NCEA qualification. HPC is one of a small number of schools to pilot the national Certificate in Primary Industry studies with the intention of expanding to horticulture and forestry. Students gain practical experience through learning on the Haurakian Charitable Trust farm only five minutes walk from the college.
Further Opportunities
Additional courses are offered through the Correspondence School and Secondary Tertiary
Alignment Funding as for example, Legal Studies, Languages, Health Studies and First Aid.
